Asuma Sarutobi is the sensei of team 10, which consists of Choji Akimichi, Shikamaru Nara, and Ino Yamanaka. He always has a cigarette in his mouth.
When the chuunin exam comes he nominates all three of his students.
In chapter 314 of the manga, it is revealed that Asuma is the Third Hokage's son. Then, in chapter 330, it is revealed that Asuma is Konohamaru's uncle, and he and Kurenai are lovers. We also learn died in the previous issue.
Also in the manga, Asuma is killed by the two Akatsuki members Hidan and Kakuzu. Hidan used a technique such that everytime Hidan gets attacked, his damage gets transfered to Asuma as well... and then Hidan deals a death blow to himself (since he's immortal and Asuma is not). Choji and Ino took him back to Konoha, but by the time they arrived, Asuma passed.
